OXFORD, Miss. - As had been expected, Ole Miss redshirt freshman running back Jamal Pittman of Columbia, Miss., suffered a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee during last Saturday's victory over Arkansas State.
"After further evaluation, the M.R.I. has revealed a significant tear to the anterior cruciate ligament and a moderate sprain of the medial collateral ligament in Jamal's left knee," said Ole Miss head athletic trainer Tim Mullins. Pittman sustained the injury when hit while diving for the end zone at the end of a 15-yard run to the one yard line.
According to Mullins, reconstruction surgery to Pittman's ACL will be scheduled in the immediate future. "Jamal will spend time before surgery working on strength and range of motion," Mullins said.
While no timetable has been set for Pittman's return, he has been lost for the remainder of the 2003 season. After missing the season opener at Vanderbilt, Pittman had seen action in the other five games and currently ranks fourth on the team in rushing with 214 yards on 42 carries with one touchdown. He also caught one pass for another 17 yards.
"Jamal knows what's expected and the challenges ahead," Mullins said. "He is eager to start the process and we have high hopes for a great return like he made from his previous injury." Pittman suffered an injury to his right knee during the latter stages of spring drills and had ACL reconstruction.
