Volleyball Falls To Memphis 3-0 On The Road

MEMPHIS -- - The Ole Miss volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (24-30, 25-30, 25-30) match to Memphis Tuesday night at the Elma Roane Field House. With the loss, the Lady Rebels dropped to 4-19 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 21-2.
Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Refenes led the Lady Rebels with eight kills and five blocks. Junior outside hitter Elena Garcia and freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Toohey each had seven kills, for the Lady Rebels, who had 11 service errors on the night.
Memphis jumped out to an 8-2 lead in game one, forcing Ole Miss to call its first timeout. Following the timeout, the Lady Rebels won three straight points to get within three (8-5). The Tigers used a 5-0 run to extend their lead to eight, 13-5. Down 19-11, head coach Joe Getzin used his final timeout. Things didn't get much better, as Memphis went on to take the game 30-24.
Game two stayed close with Ole Miss taking a 5-2 lead early. Memphis tied it and then the two teams traded points. With the game tied at 15, Memphis won three consecutive points to go ahead 18-15. They led 19-16, but Ole Miss answered, winning of six of the next eight points to regain the lead, 22-20, as Memphis coach Carrie Yerty called timeout. The Lady Rebels led 23-21, but the Tigers went on a 4-1 run to take the lead at 25-24 as Ole Miss used its first timeout of the game. Memphis won five of the next six points to close out the game 30-25 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Ole Miss, looking to extend the match to a fourth game, took a 7-4 lead to begin game three. The Lady Rebels led 14-10, when Memphis won four straight points to tie the game. The Tigers took their first lead in the game 16-15 and led 18-16 as Ole Miss called timeout. Memphis increased its lead to four (21-17) forcing the Lady Rebels to burn their final timeout. A 6-3 run extended the Tigers advantage to seven (27-20). They went on to win the game 30-25 and the match.
Memphis was led by junior outside hitter Tiara Gilkey's 13 kills. Kristen Hardee finished with six kills and hit .364.
The Lady Rebels get back into conference play this weekend with a pair of matches at Auburn and Alabama. Friday's match at Auburn will be televised by FoxSportsNetSouth. The tape-delayed match will air on Sunday at Noon.
