OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team dropped their final match of the season, falling to Tennessee 3-0 Sunday at the Gillom Sports Center to end the year at 7-24 and 5-11 in the SEC.
It was senior day at the Gillom Sports Center as the Lady Rebels honored their lone senior, Karla Zschau, prior to the start of the match. Zschau is the last in a long of volleyball sisters who all played collegiately. Her sister Kira, was an All-SEC performer for Ole Miss from 1997-2000.
Junior outside hitter Elena Garcia posted her 18th double-double of the season with 15 kills and 10 digs to lead Ole Miss. She also recorded her 900th career kill in the first game of the match. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Refenes finished with eight kills and four blocks.
Freshman setter Jennifer McGowan had 36 assists giving her 1,077 for the season, moving into ninth place on the single season list. She became just the third freshman to make the top 10 list.
"We played a very good Tennessee team that was playing well today," head coach Joe Getzin said. We didn't play to our potential.
"Elena proved this season why she's our best player. Rachel played great this season too. The entire team improved from the beginning of the season to now. We had four freshman on the team most of the time, and we made some strides at the end."
Tennessee jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening game, forcing coach Getzin to call his first timeout. The Lady Vols maintained their advantage and increased it to nine (19-10) as Ole Miss used its final timeout. The Lady Rebels never got any closer, as Tennessee went on to win 30-23.
In game two, the Lady Rebels came out much better and gained a 13-9 lead. But, Tennessee would tie it up at 18. The two teams then traded points until at 21 all, UT won consecutive points as Ole Miss signaled for a timeout. Tennessee won two more points to go up 25-21, and they held on to claim game two 30-25 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Looking to extend the match, the Lady Rebels couldn't get out of the gate, and fell behind 7-0 in the third game. After the timeout, Tennessee increased its lead to nine (12-3). The Lady Rebels answered, using a 7-1 run to get within three (13-10). They would pull within one twice, but Tennessee never relinquished the lead, and went on to win game three 30-20 and the match.
The Lady Vols were led by Amy Morris' 15 kills and 14 digs. Kristen Andre tallied 11 kills on 22 attempts and hit .318 for Tennessee, who improved to 19-8 overall and 9-6 in the SEC.
Ole Miss had eight service errors to Tennessee's two. Tennessee hit .247, while Ole Miss finished at just .141.
