BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior guard Genice Terry hit the lone three-point basket of the game for Ole Miss with seven seconds left to give Ole Miss a, 54-53, win over Marshall and their first tourney title of the season. The Lady Rebels claimed the championship trophy of the Lehigh Christmas City Classic with the win over the Thundering Herd.
"This was a big win for us," said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. "Marshall is a very good team. I was very pleased with our determination today, especially the play of Genice Terry."
A tight game throughout, Ole Miss managed a 24-22 lead at the break behind senior guard Tenisha Gist's two free throws with no time remaining. Gist was fouled going to the basket as time ran out.
Marshall forged an eight-point lead at the beginning of the second half to pull out to a 36-28 advantage. The Lady Rebels came back behind the strong second half play of junior center Amber Terrell. Terrell, who finished the game with 11 points, found the basket at all the right times to help bring Ole Miss back into the game.
With Ole Miss trailing 53-51 Terry hit a three with seven seconds left to give the Lady Rebels a one-point lead. Marshall attempted a lay-up with time running out, but Terrell blocked the shot and grabbed the rebound to seal the win for Ole Miss.
Terry, named MVP of the tournament, led Ole Miss with 16 points. Freshman forward Armintie Price, who was named to the All-Tournament team, finished the game with 14 points and four rebounds. Junior guard Carletta Brown, also named to the All-Tournament team, led Ole Miss with five assists.
Ole Miss will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 3, when they travel to Cookeville, Tenn., to take on the Tennessee Tech Golden Eaglettes. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
