OXFORD, Miss. - Shawn Marcum went 2-for-4 with an RBI and pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn his second save and lead SW Missouri State to a 4-2 win over No. 25 (Baseball America) Ole Miss Wednesday afternoon, in front of 1,588 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Bears' starter Brad Ziegler (2-0) carried a shutout into the eighth inning and limited Ole Miss to two runs on three hits and two walks to earn the win. He also struck out three.
Ole Miss (2-1) brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth as Drew Rogers was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning. After Marcum coaxed Stephen Head to fly out to center for the second out of the inning, Charlie Waite hit a fly ball to the warning track in left field. However, left fielder Jacob Hilgendorf was able to make the catch to end the game from his knees after slipping on the wet surface.
Freshman left-hander Brae Wright (0-1) suffered the loss in his first collegiate start. Wright was touched for four runs, three earned, on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Redshirt freshman Anthony Cupps pitched five scoreless innings of relief for Wright, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out five.
"They (SMS) deserved to make that catch in left field and deserved to win," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "We just didn't play well, especially offensively. I thought early in the game Ziegler really took control of the game and began to get confidence. He did a real good job of mixing up his pitches to keep us off balance."
Brooks Colvin and Greg Mathis also had two hits each for SMS (3-1) as the Bears out-hit the Rebels 9-4.
Senior shortstop Chad Sterbens was 2-for-4 for Ole Miss and drove in Ole Miss' only runs of the game with a two-run double down the left field line off reliever David Bader in the eighth.
SMS scored two runs in the second when Rick Wilson singled to right to score Mathis and Clay Wheeler also scored on the play off a throwing error by right fielder Seth Smith. The Bears added two more in the third on a sac fly by Chad Woodmansee to score Dant'e Brinkley, who reached on a triple, and an RBI single by Marcum.
Ole Miss will return to action Friday against Texas-Arlington at 1 p.m,, at the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational. The Rebels will also play No. 2 Rice, Saturday at noon, and No. 23 Stetson, Sunday at noon, during the tournament.
