No. 25 Ole Miss Drops Two Saturday In Houston

GAME 1: TEXAS-ARLINGTON 8, No. 25 OLE MISS 7
HOUSTON - - Texas-Arlington scored two runs on a two-out error in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete a rally from a 7-0 deficit and defeat No. 25 (Baseball America) Ole Miss 8-7 Saturday afternoon at Rice's Reckling Park in the opening game of the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational.
With Ole Miss (2-2) leading 7-6 in the bottom of the ninth, junior right-hander Jeremy Zick struck out Hunter Pence and coaxed Chris Taylor to fly out to center to start the inning. Ryan Roberts drew a two-out walk and Darrell Preston was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Zick got Paul Bruder to hit a fly ball to center but center fielder Matt Mossberg was unable to make the catch, allowing Roberts and Preston to both score and give the Mavericks (5-6) the win.
The Rebels led 7-0 after three innings, scoring five runs in the second and two in the third to chase starter B.J. Brandenberger. Brandenberger was charged with seven runs, only two earned, on six hits and two walks in two-plus innings.
Freshman right-hander Blake Pierson came on in relief of Brandenberger and shut down the Ole Miss bats, allowing five hits and two walks during six scoreless innings.
Ole Miss starter Mark Holliman kept the UTA offense in check with seven solid innings, scattering six hits and walking one while holding the Mavericks to one run.
UTA would touch the Rebel bullpen for five runs on seven hits in the eighth. The Mavericks touched sophomore left-hander Dwayne Hall for three straight hits, including a two-run double by Chris Taylor to cut the Ole Miss lead to 7-3. Junior right-hander Nick Bradshaw came on in relief of Hall, and Ryan Roberts greeted him with an RBI double to make it 7-4. A batter later, Bruder singled home Roberts and pinch-hitter Dan Dody capped the inning with a two-out RBI single to make it 7-6.
Charlie Coffey (1-1), the fifth UTA pitcher of the morning, earned the win, with 2/3 innings of relief.
Zick (0-1) suffered the loss for Ole Miss as he allowed two unearned runs on one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings. He also struck out three.
Ten different Mavericks recorded at least one hit as UTA out-hit Ole Miss 13-12.
Matt Tolbert and Drew Rogers had three hits each to lead the Rebels. Senior shortstop Chad Sterbens went 1-for-5 and hit his first home run of the year with a two-run shot to cap the five-run second.

GAME 2: No. 2 RICE 6, No. 25 OLE MISS 0
HOUSTON - Sophomore right-handers Jeff Niemann and Wade Townsend combined on a two-hit shutout in leading No. 2 (Baseball America) Rice (7-1) to a 6-0 win over No. 25 (Baseball America) Ole Miss (2-3) Saturday afternoon at Reckling Park in the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational.
Earlier in the day, the Rebels opened the tournament with an 8-7 loss to Texas-Arlington when two runs scored on a two-out error in the bottom of the ninth.
Niemann (2-0) allowed two hits and two walks, while striking out seven during seven innings of work to earn the win. He retired the first 10 batters he faced before senior shortstop Chad Sterbens' one-out single in the fourth put the Rebels in the hit column.
Townsend retired all six batters he faced and struck out four in his two innings of action.
Rice jumped on Ole Miss starter Alan Horne for two runs in each of the first three innings to build a 6-0 lead. Horne (1-1) was lifted in the fourth after allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Right fielder Austin Davis and third baseman Craig Stansberry provided the big blows for the Rice offense. Davis gave the Owls a 2-0 lead with a two-run double in the first inning and Stansberry hit his first home run of the season with a two-run shot in the third to make it 6-0.
Sophomore first baseman Vincent Sinisi went 3-for-5 to lead Rice at the plate as nine different Owls recorded at least one hit. Rice out-hit Ole Miss 15-2 on the evening.
Senior shortstop Chad Sterbens picked up both of the Rebels' hits.
Redshirt freshman Eric Fowler worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings of relief in Ole Miss' only other bright spot. Fowler scattered six hits and walked one, while striking out two.
Ole Miss will conclude the tournament Sunday with a noon contest against No. 23 (Baseball America) Stetson. The Hatters (3-4) dropped an 11-6 game to the Owls earlier in the day, and are played UT-Arlington in the final contest of the day.
