OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore right-hander Alan Horne recorded his first career complete game and struck out a career-high eight to lead Ole Miss to an 8-2 non-conference win over Western Michigan Friday night in front of 1,755 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
The win improved the Rebels to 4-3 on the season, while Friday night's game marked the season opener for the Broncos.
Horne (2-1) limited Western Michigan to two runs on three hits and one walk, while using 106 pitches on the evening. He retired 16 straight batters following an RBI double by Royce Dickerson until issuing a two-out walk to Joe Zacharzewski in the eighth.
Senior first baseman Dustin Cliburn went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Ole Miss' 10-hit attack.
Ole Miss scored seven runs in the first inning as eight straight batters reached base safely with two outs. Seth Smith started the scoring with a two-out solo shot down the left field line to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead. The homer was his first of the season.
Cliburn also had a two-run single to make it 3-0 and Matt Mossberg added a two-RBI single to extend Ole Miss' lead to 6-0. Matt Tolbert capped the frame with an RBI single to score Mossberg.
Senior left-hander Pat Misch, a fifth-round draft choice of the Houston Astros last summer, was charged with the loss. Misch allowed all eight runs on 10 hits and two walks.
Game two of this weekend's three-game series is set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and Sunday's series finale is also set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday's game will be carried locally on Oxford's WTNM Supertalk Mississippi 105.5 FM, however, Sunday's game will not be broadcasted due to conflicts with Ole Miss men's and women's basketball.
