LEXINGTON, Ky. - Brooke Turner and Desiree Layman homered as Ole Miss split a softball doubleheader at Kentucky Saturday, winning game two, 8-4, after dropping game one, 4-1.
The finale of the three-game SEC series is Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, as Ole Miss (10-14, 2-3 SEC) wraps up a 12-day, 13-game road trip.
Turner, a sophomore from Southaven, Miss., set the tone for game two, leading off the contest with her second home run of the year. It would be the first of four Rebel runs to cross the plate in the opening frame without getting another hit. Ole Miss used two UK errors, a hit-batter and four base-on-balls, including RBI-walks by Layman and Andrea Brahs.
However, Kentucky (9-14, 1-4 SEC) also took advantage of bad defense to post a four-spot of its own in the bottom of the first inning. Lyndsey Angus singled home the first run, and a pair of Rebel errors allowed three more to cross the plate and tie the game early.
Ole Miss jumped back on top with a three-run fourth. Mandy Ott doubled off the left field fence to plate Britte Hardy and DeDe Justice. Layman followed with a run-scoring single that helped put Ole Miss up for good.
The Rebels added an insurance run in the seventh when Rebecca McIntire singled and scored on a botched Jordan Chitwood groundball.
Ott finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Brahs tallied two doubles and one run driven in. McIntire was 2-for-4.
Lindsay Price, who started game one, picked up the victory in relief to improve to 7-6. The senior righthander shut down the Wildcats over the final five innings, allowing only one baserunner while striking out eight of the 15 batters faced. Rebel hurler Dana Brill started and worked two-plus innings.
Bobbi Darretta (1-1) tossed all seven innings in defeat, giving up eight hits and eight walks.
The early game saw Layman go deep but the Rebels would come up short, 4-1. After three scoreless frames, Kentucky put its first five batters of the fourth inning on base and plated two runs on RBI-singles by Rachel Friberg and Ingrid Lochely.
The Wildcats tacked on two more in the fifth, keyed by back-to-back doubles by Megan Brooks and Nikki Jones.
The Rebels broke into the Kat lead in the sixth inning, when Layman launched a Amy Kendall offering to deep left field for her first round-tripper of the year and seventh of her career.
It would be one of only three UM hits surrendered by Kendall (6-7), who went the distance in the win. Price suffered her second straight loss, despite seven strikeouts. She also ran her school-record streak of consecutive complete games to 10.
