Rebels Split Softball Doubleheader with Southern Miss

OXFORD, Miss. -- Dana Brill earned her first win as an Ole Miss softball pitcher in leading the Rebels to a doubleheader split with Southern Miss Wednesday. Ole Miss (12-15) took game two, 1-0, after dropping game one, 4-0.
After losing five of her first six starts in the Red and Blue, Brill (1-5) combined with senior Lindsay Price on a two-hit shutout in Wednesday's nightcap. Brill, a freshman from Houston, Texas, worked 4.1 innings with one hit allowed.
She exited in the fifth after the Golden Eagles (12-16) threatened with a runner at third base with one out. Price finished off Southern with one hit surrendered over the final 2.2 frames in registering her third career save and first of the season.
Ole Miss picked up the game's lone run in the third inning, when Stacy McCommon, a freshman from Amory, Miss., singled, stole second base and third, and reached home on a USM throwing error.
Danielle Wymer (4-6) limited the Rebels to four hits over the full seven innings in the loss.
The early game saw Ole Miss suffer only its fourth shutout of the season. Eagle hurler Jessica Holaway (6-9) held the Rebels to three hits - all bunts - in the complete-game win.
Leslie Day (4-4) went the distance on the Rebel mound and relinquished a pair of runs in the second inning off RBI by Ashley Brenan and Laura Smith.
Southern maintained the 2-0 edge until the seventh, when the Eagles sealed the victory with a Heather Bell two-run homer.
Ole Miss continues its five-game homestand this weekend against Auburn. The three-game SEC series features a Saturday doubleheader and Sunday finale, with games times at 1 p.m. CST each day.
