OXFORD, Miss. - No. 29 (Collegiate Baseball) Ole Miss used a three-run sixth inning scoring, highlighted by a two-run bases loaded single by Seth Smith to break a 3-3 tie, to defeat No. 23 (NCBWA) Southern Miss 6-3 Wednesday evening in front of 1,876 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.

Matt Tolbert singled to lead-off the sixth, and after advancing to second on Matt Mossberg's sac bunt, Jonathan Swearingen hit an infield single to third to put runners on the corners. Chad Sterbens was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Smith, who singled up the middle on a 3-2 pitch off Noah Tritz to score Tolbert and Swearingen.

A batter later, Sterbens scored on Charlie Waite's sacrifice fly to right to make it 6-3.

Jeremy Zick (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win, and freshman left-hander Stephen Head worked the final 1 1/3 innings to notch his fourth save.

Tritz (0-1) suffered the loss as he was charged with four runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Jason Lowery gave Southern Miss (18-7) a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a two-run home run off Rebel starter Brae Wright. The homer was Lowery's second of the year.

The Golden Eagles added another run in the fifth to make it 3-1 on Jarrett Hoffpauir's sac fly to score Marc Maddox.

Ole Miss (17-7) tied the game in the fifth on Charlie Babineaux's third home run of the year, a two-run shot that scored Smith.

Smith and Swearingen both recorded three hits on the night as the Rebels out-hit the Golden Eagles 11-8.

Jeff Cook was 2-for-4 to lead Southern Miss.

The Rebels will now open a three-game Southeastern Conference series with No. 9 Mississippi State Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., at Swayze Field.

Southern Miss will host Tulane in a three-game Conference USA series beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park.
