No. 9 Mississippi State Takes Series Opener

OXFORD, Miss. - Paul Maholm and Jonathan Paplebon combined on a seven-hit shutout as No. 9 Mississippi State defeated No. 29 Ole Miss 2-0 in a pitcher's duel Friday afternoon in front of 3,401 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field, in the opener of a three-game Southeastern Conference series.
Maholm (4-1) scattered six hits, walked one and struck out eight over eight innings before turning the game over to Papelbon in the ninth with the Bulldogs leading 2-0.
Papelbon allowed just a two-out infield single to Stephen Head before coaxing Matt Tolbert to pop out to first to end the game and notch his second save.
Mississippi State (20-3-1, 6-1 SEC) scored the game's only runs in the sixth on Craig Tatum's one-out single up the middle to score Matthew Brinson and Brad Corley.
Mark Holliman (3-1) suffered the loss, allowing the two runs on seven hits and three walks in eight innings. He also struck out four.
Both teams recorded seven hits on the day.
Ole Miss (17-8, 5-2 SEC) stranded eight runners on base, while the Bulldogs left six.
Corley and Matthew Maniscalco both went 2-for-3 for Mississippi State, and Maniscalco extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Steven Gendron was 0-for-4 as he had his 16-game hit streak halted.
Chad Sterbens and Charlie Babineaux both went 2-for-4 to lead the Rebels at the plate.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and Sunday's series-finale is also scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Sophomore right-hander Alan Johnson (3-0, 2.35 ERA) is scheduled to start for Mississippi State opposite Ole Miss' senior right-hander T.J. Beam (3-0, 1.62 ERA) on Saturday.
