AUBURN, Ala. - The Ole Miss men's golf team will close out the regular season at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate this weekend, using the final tournament of the spring as a tuneup for the SEC Championships and as a chance to strengthen a run toward the NCAA Championships.
The Rebels shake up the lineup this weekend, at a tournament that boasts four teams ranked in the top-25 including host and 13th-ranked Auburn leading the way. Also competing will be 18th-ranked College of Charleston, 21st-ranked Arkansas and 24th ranked Vanderbilt.
"We have a chance this weekend to make some things happen and improve our standing heading into the SEC Championships," said head coach Woody Cowart. "We've got an energetic lineup who are ready to get out there and compete. All five guys want to prove what they're worth on the course and that speaks well for this squad."
Competing for the Rebels will be freshman Jonathan Lenz, sophomore Bryan Kane, juniors Lucas Boyd and Pope Spruiell, and senior Brian Swope.
Lenz leads the way for Ole Miss, having seen the most action for the Rebels. The freshman has played in all but one tournament for Ole Miss, posting three finishes in the top-20, including his career-best finish of fifth at the Cleveland Golf/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate to open the season.
Lucas Boyd enters the tournament with the best stroke average on the team after having seen action in seven of the nine tournaments on the season. Boyd boasts a 73.55 average on the year and has one finish in the top-20 which came in his last outing at the Conrad Rehling Spring Invitational where he tied for 20th.
Spruiell, a junior from Livingston, Ala., has played in seven of nine tournaments as well, posting two finishes in the top-20, including a tie for fifth with Lenz in the first tournament of the season. The Junior College All-American also boasts the lowest score for a single round for Ole Miss on the year with a 66 at the Beau Chene Collegiate Classic.
Kane and Swope have seen limited action for the Rebels this season. Kane played in two tournaments on the season posting a stroke average of 75.00 in that time. Swope played in three tournaments on the season with a 77.88 stroke average.
The tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Friday at the Saugahatchee Country Club, a pr-72, 6,689-yard course. The teams will begin the second and third rounds at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Results for each round will be posted at www.OleMissSports.com.
