"Today was a great day for Ole Miss Track and Field," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "Not only did we perform well as a team, but our tremendous new facility was finally put to good use. We have one of the top facilities in the country and it was obvious by the performances out there today."
Leading the way individually for the Rebels were sophomore Antwon Hicks, junior Kendrick Triggs and senior Stacy Andrews, who each finished with three first-place finishes.
Hicks, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA and No. 3 in the World in the 110-meter hurdles, won the event with his time of 13.69. Hicks also finished first in the high jump with his mark of 6-9.5. Hicks and Triggs joined forces with sophomores Taye Biddle and Shantel Glass to win the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 40.44.
Triggs won both the 100 meters and the 200 meters, in addition to his relay title. The Memphis, Tenn., native turned in a time of 10.42 in the 100 meters and 20.92 in the 200 meters, which currently ranks sixth in the NCAA.
"We have been traveling around competing at meets every since I have been at Ole Miss," said Triggs. "It was so nice to be at home for once and be well rested and ready to run. We had great weather and support from the Ole Miss fans and it was good to get out and perform well."
While Hicks and Triggs dominated the track, Andrews took to the field for his three victories. Andrews won the shot put with his toss of 51-4.25. He also won the discus with his mark of 185-1 and the hammer throw with his distance of 179-9.
Former Rebel great Savante' Stringfellow turned in a dazzling performance for the Ole Miss faithful as he took home top honors in the long jump. Stringfellow, who finished the 2002 season ranked No. 1 in the World, turned in the best mark in the World for the 2003 season with his leap of 27-9.25. He also placed third in the 100 meters with his time of 10.57.
"Today was a good day for me," said Stringfellow, who was a three-time NCAA Champion while competing for Ole Miss. "I wanted to start out my season with a good jump and I definitely did that today. The weather was great and the fan support was phenomenal. I had no choice but to go out and show the fans what they came to see."
Glass came in second behind Stringfellow in the long jump, turning in the top collegiate mark in the event. He leaped 24-7.75 to place second. Fellow sophomore Brandon Atkinson finished second overall and first among collegiate competitors in the triple jump with his personal best mark of 52-6.5. Glass is currently ranked seventh in the NCAA in the long jump, while Atkinson's mark moves him into a tie for fifth-place in the NCAA.
A trio of sophomores took the top three spots in the heptathlon as Antisha Anderson qualified for the NCAA Championships with her first-place point total of 5210. Anderson also set a new Ole Miss school record with her two-day total. She topped Andrea Beltz's mark of 5033 set in 1995. Following Anderson was LaToya McBride in second place with 4894. McBride's mark moves her into third place on the Ole Miss all-time chart. Kesia Bass placed third with a two-day point total of 4537.
