ST. SIMON'S ISLAND, Ga. - Pope Spruiell turned in a score of 75, finishing tied for 22nd, to lead the Rebels in the first round of the SEC Championships. Ole Miss finished the day in 10th place with a score of 304.
Georgia led the way overall, holding down first place after the first day with a score of 288. Kevin Kisner of Georgia and Brett Stegmaier of Florida shared the top spot in the individual standings with a score of 67.
The tournament was held up by a four-hour delay due to weather.
"We had a steady day today, though not the breakout round of golf we were looking for to push us into the upper half of the standings out of the gate," said head coach Woody Cowart. "We need to come out focused tomorrow and make a move. With the weather conditions we had to battle, it's not a bad round."
Spruiell led the way for Ole Miss in the first round of action. His 75 in the first round was the best performance by a Rebel on the day.
Junior Jordan Dempsey and sophomore Jarrod Gardner finished right behind Spruiell in the standings. The duo carded first-round scores of 76 to tie for the No. 29 spot overall.
Lucas Boyd finished the first day tied for the No. 37 spot on the leader board with a score of 77, while freshman Jonathan Lenz rounded out the scoring for the Rebels with a 78. The 78 put Lenz in a tie for 39th.
The second round of play will begin at 8 a.m. EST. The tournament is being played at the Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course, a par-70, 6,550-yard course.
