Rebels Buckle Down, Move Up To Eighth In SEC Championships

ST. SIMON'S ISLAND, Ga. - Jordan Dempsey led a resurgence by the Ole Miss golf team on Saturday, firing a 2-under-par score of 68 to propel himself into a tie for ninth, and his team into eighth, in the second round of the SEC Championships with a score of 304-290-594.
Georgia and Tennessee finished the second round tied for the top spot in the standings. Georgia carded a 289-288-577, while Tennessee fired a 288-289-577. Kevin Kisner of the Bulldogs held down the top spot as an individual with a score of 67-69-136.
"I am excited about what we were able to do today as a team," said head coach Woody Cowart. "We played more focused and with more intensity on reaching our goals. We did a good job of finishing off holes and taking the opportunities that were presented to us."
Dempsey turned in a solid performance in the second round of action, recovering quickly from a slow start on the first day. The junior from Jacksonville, Fla., fired a 2-under-par 68 in the second round. Dempsey catapulted himself into a tie for ninth overall with a two-day score of 76-68-144.
Lucas Boyd joined Dempsey in turning around his fortunes from the first round. The junior from Garland, Texas, fired an even-par score of 70 in the second round and jumped up to a tie for 17th in the standings with a two-day total of 77-70-147.
Jarrod Gardner inched up the standings as well, firing a 76-74-150 to move himself up into a tie for the No. 29 spot overall.
Junior Pope Spruiell slipped a notch in the second round, firing a two-round total of 75-78-153 to hold a tie for 39th after the second round. Freshman Jonathan Lenz rounded out the day for Ole Miss, carding a 78-80-158 to tie for 52nd heading into the final round of action.
The tournament, which is being played on the par-70, 6,550-yard Seaside Course at the Sea Island Golf Club, will conclude with the final round on Sunday. Teams will tee off at 8 a.m. EST and an award ceremony will immediately follow the conclusion of the round of play.
