No. 23 Southern Miss Shuts Down Ole Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Sophomore right-hander Cliff Russum pitched a complete game to lead No. 23 Southern Miss to an 8-2 win over in-state rival Ole Miss in front of 2,964 at Pete Taylor Park Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Golden Eagles (24-9) drew a split of the two-game season series. Ole Miss (20-12) won the first meeting of the year, 6-3 in Oxford on March 26.
Russum (4-4) limited the Rebels to just four hits and walked two, while striking out 10. He retired the first 11 batters he faced before issuing a two-out walk to Seth Smith in the fourth and did not allow Ole Miss its first hit of the game until Barry Gunther singled to start the sixth.
Southern Miss broke open a 1-0 game with three runs in the fifth. Adam Smith reached on a lead-off single and scored two batters later on Jason Lowery's RBI single. Brae Wright struck out Jeff Cook for the second out of the inning, but Brad Willcutt followed with a single to score Matt Shepherd, and Clint King capped the inning with a run-scoring double down the left field line.
King finished the night 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a solo home run in the seventh to make it 5-0. The home run was King's 11th of the season. Lowery went 2-for-5 with two RBIs as Southern Miss out-hit Ole Miss 12-4 on the evening.
Wright (2-2) allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits over five innings and struck out three in taking the loss.
Charlie Waite hit his first home run of the year for the Rebels, with a two-run shot in the eighth to make it 5-2.
Southern Miss picked up three runs on four hits in the eighth to provide the final 8-2 margin.
Ole Miss will next open a three-game Southeastern Conference series at No. 8 LSU Friday night at 7 p.m., at Alex Box Stadium. Friday's game was originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m., but was pushed back 30 minutes due to LSU's spring football game, scheduled for 5 p.m., at Tiger Stadium.
