COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ole Miss sophomore Antwon Hicks placed third in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2003 NCAA Mideast Regional meet on Saturday, earning his way to the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships, as the top five finishers in individual events earn automatic bids. Hicks, despite still recovering from injury, clocked in at 13.62 to claim third place.
"I am very pleased with my race today," said Hicks, a Hot Springs, Ark., native. "I am finally starting to feel better going over the hurdles and it felt great to get in a good race. I am now looking forward to preparing for the NCAA Championships."
Hicks, who placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships, will be searching for his third-straight All-American honor. He earned All-America honors at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 110-meter hurdles and at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles.
Hicks joins senior Stacy Andrews as the Ole Miss automatic qualifiers in the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Andrews earned a bid on Friday, by placing fourth in the discus throw.
Sophomores Marquita Aldridge, Camilia Pittman, Chiquita Stephens and LaToya McBride joined forces for a fifth-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. The Lady Rebels await word on a possible wild card entry to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as only the top three relay teams earn automatic berths.
Sophomore Brandon Atkinson narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships, as he placed eighth in the triple jump with his mark of 52-6.
Hicks and Andrews will travel to Sacramento, Calif., June 11-14 for the 2003 NCAA Championships.
