OXFORD, Miss. - For the second straight year, Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning of New Orleans, La., has been selected to the Playboy preseason All-America football team, it was announced Thursday by Playboy Sports Editor Gary Cole.
Manning joins his brother, Peyton, as a two-time selection, while his father, Archie, was named to the preseason All-America team in 1970.
A 6-5, 218 pound senior, Eli Manning enters his final season at Ole Miss as the holder of 24 school records. He has virtually re-written the Ole Miss passing record book after only two years as the starter.
Manning passed for 313 yards in the 27-23 MainStay Independence Bowl victory over Nebraska last December to become the school's all-time passing leader with 6,519 yards. He also set Ole Miss career records last season for 300-yard passing games (6), 250-yard passing games (14), and 200-yard passing games (20). He is the first quarterback in Ole Miss history to have back-to-back seasons with at least 2,000 yards passing.
Eli Manning's selection to the Playboy preseason All-America team marked the 16th time for an Ole Miss player to be chosen. Manning joins offensive guard Stan Hindman (1964-65) and punter Bill Smith (1985-86) as two-time selections from Ole Miss.
Other Rebels named Playboy preseason All-America include end Allen Brown (1964), defensive back Glenn Cannon (1969), linebacker Dewayne Dotson (1993), tackle Jim Dunaway (1962), offensive guard Everett Lindsay (1992), running back Deuce McAllister (2000), offensive tackle Terrence Metcalf (2001), punter Jim Miller (1979), and tight end Burney Veazey (1973). Former Ole Miss head coach John Vaught, who this week celebrated his 94th birthday, was the Playboy preseason Coach of the Year in 1960.
