OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss freshman 1B/LHP Stephen Head has been named a second team All-America as a utility player by USA Today Sports Weekly, while three Rebel players were named to the All-Tournament team at this past weekend's NCAA Houston Regional. Selected to the All-Tournament squad was Head as a DH, 2B Chad Sterbens and OF Seth Smith.
Head, the SEC Freshman of the Year, appeared in 58-of-62 games this season. He led Ole Miss with a .337 average and recorded a team-high 44 RBIs. He also hit six home runs. As a pitcher, Head made 20 appearances, including four starts, recording a 4-1 record with 13 saves and a team-leading 1.40 ERA in 57 2/3 innings. The 13 saves set a new school single-season record. He also struck out 43 while walking 16 and limited opponents to a .192 batting-average-against.
"This is a great honor for Stephen and one that is very deserving," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "To have the type of year he did both at the plate and on the mound for a true freshman in the SEC is amazing."
Head went 5-for-14 at the plate with two RBIs in three games at this past weekend's NCAA Houston Regional, hosted by Rice University. He pitched a complete-game, three-hitter in the Rebels' 7-1 win over McNeese State this past Saturday, striking out seven and walking two.
Sterbens batted .417 at the NCAA Houston Regional. |
Sterbens hit .417 at the regional, going 5-for-12 with a double and two stolen bases, and Smith was 5-for-13 with three doubles and a home run.
The Rebels finished the season 35-27 after being eliminated from the postseason with a 5-4 loss to Wichita State Saturday evening.
