TORRINGTON, Conn. - Old Dominion sophomore right-hander Justin Verlander pitched 7.1 no-hit innings and combined with Auburn sophomore right-hander Steven Register on a one-hitter in Team USA's 5-0 win over the Torrington Twisters of the Northeast College Baseball League Thursday evening.
Ole Miss sophomore outfielder Seth Smith drew a pinch-hit walk in the eighth inning and played right field in the ninth.
The shutout was the U.S. National Team's fourth in eight games of the team's 22-game warm-up tour for the Pan American Games, to be held next month in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Team USA also improved to 8-0 with the win.
The lone hit off Verlander (3-0) was a single to left by Marvin Lowrance in the eighth. Verlander also allowed just one walk and struck out 10 of the 25 batters he faced.
Team USA took advantage of three Twister-errors and sent 11 batters to the plate in scoring all five of its runs in the first inning.
Georgia Tech third baseman Tyler Greene, Yellow Jacket catcher Mike Nickeas and Stanford left fielder Danny Putnam all had two hits each for Team USA.
Team USA will play the North Adams (Mass.) Steeplecats Friday evening at 6 p.m.
