Volleyball Loses Tough Battle At Tennessee, 3-1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After an exciting start to the match, the Ole Miss volleyball team lost a tough battle at Tennessee Friday night, falling 3-1 to the Lady Vols at the Stokely Athletics Center.
Tennessee (11-2, 1-0) jumped out to a 10-4 lead in game one. Ole Miss (2-13, 1-1) pulled to within 18-15 as Tennessee called timeout. Following the timeout, the Lady Vols won three straight points to extend their lead back to six, as Ole Miss used its first timeout. The Lady Vols led 22-15, but Ole Miss went on a 6-1 run to climb within two (23-21) forcing Tennessee to use its last timeout of the game. The Lady Rebels won the next two points to tie it up at 23. Tied at 24, Ole Miss won two straight points to go up 26-24. Tennessee tied it at 26. Both teams held off game points, but at 33-33, Tennessee won the next point and then aced the Lady Rebels to take game one 35-33.
Game two went back and forth with Ole Miss ahead 12-11. Tennessee won four of the next five points to go up 15-13 as Ole Miss called timeout. The Lady Vols increased their lead to four (19-15) and Ole Miss never got closer than three the rest of the way as Tennessee won the game 30-25 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Ole Miss won game three 30-24 to extend the match. The game stayed tight early and then the Lady Rebels went up 18-14. Tennessee used a 6-3 run to make it 21-20, as Ole Miss called timeout. The Lady Rebels led 25-23. They would go on a 5-1 run to close out the game and force a fourth game. Junior outside hitter Elena Garcia had five kills on nine attempts for a .444 hitting percentage and five digs, and freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Toohey hit .455 with five kills to keep the Lady Rebels alive in the match.
The Lady Rebels got down early in game four, 11-6 before calling timeout. Tennessee led 14-10, but went on a 4-1 run to go ahead by seven (18-11) as Ole Miss used its final timeout of the game. Following the timeout, the Lady Rebels won five consecutive points to get within 18-16 forcing Tennessee to call timeout. Ole Miss trailed by only one (19-18), but Tennessee claimed four straight points to increase their lead to five (23-18). A 7-4 by the Lady Vols closed out the Lady Rebels 30-22 and gave Tennessee fourth win in a row.
Garcia led the Lady Rebels with 20 kills and 15 digs. It marks her 11th double-double of the season. She also had two blocks. Toohey added 17 kills and hit .333 for the match. Freshman Jillian Ohrman turned in a solid performance, hitting .429 with nine kills. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Refenes had five blocks.
Tennessee was led by Kristen Andre, who posted 16 kills and hit .423. Amy Morris added 16 kills and 10 digs.
Ole Miss returns to action next weekend as they travel to Kentucky and South Carolina for a pair of matches.
