FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Juniors Octavia Carter and Antwon Hicks were the top performers for the Ole Miss track and field team as they opened the 2004 portion of their schedule at the Arkansas Invitational on Friday.
Carter finished third in the high jump by clearing 5-6 and placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with her time of 8.71. Hicks, a two-time All-American, placed first among collegiate finishers in the 60-meter hurdles with his time of 7.76.
"We had a really good meet," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "Nearly all of our athletes set seasonal bests. I was really pleased with our performances across the board. It was a great way to start the new year."
Sophomore Rachel Ellison notched a third place finish for the Lady Rebels in the 800-meter dash with her time of 2:16.29, while junior Erin Jordan placed fourth in the 3,000 meters with her time of 11:04.31.
Junior Antisha Anderson was right behind Carter in the high jump with her fourth-place mark of 5-6 and junior Brandie Plyler finished third in the pole vault by clearning 11-7.75. Freshman Crystal Stewart set a new Ole Miss record in the weight throw with her toss of 48-0.75, only to be bested by sophomore Kristi Stillwell. Stillwell took over the top spot in the Lady Rebel record book with her mark of 49-3.
Juniors Chris Lawson and Franz Bernard also had strong days on the track for the Rebels. Lawson finished second in the 60-meter dash with his time of 6.78. Bernard had two top-five finishes with his third place finish in the 400 meters (47.74) and his fourth place time in the 200 meters (21.65).
Freshman Justin Jernigan placed second in the 3,000 meters with his time of 8:57.55. Junior Shantel Glass led a large group of Rebels with his third place performance in the long jump. Glass leaped 23-11.75 and was followed by freshman Charles Bailey (4th, 23-8.75), Lawson (5th, 23-5.5) and junior Brandon Atkinson (6th, 23-3.25).
Atkinson followed up his long jump performance with a third place finish in the triple jump. He recorded a mark of 51-5.75 in the meet. The Rebel 4x400-meter relay team also turned in a good time as they clocked in at 3:11.94, which was good for second place.
The Ole Miss men's and women's track and field teams will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 25, when they travel to Florida for the Gator Invitational.
