FAYETTEVILLE, Ar. - The Ole Miss Rebel and Lady Rebel track and field teams competed at Arkansas' annual Tyson Invitational on Friday and came away with several solid performances.
The meet in Fayetteville served as Ole Miss' final tuneup before the Southeastern Conference Championships, which will take place in two weeks at the University of Kentucky.
At Arkansas, the Rebels were led by the performances of junior Antwon Hicks, who finished second overall in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.71 seconds, as well as fellow junior Shantel Glass, who got third in the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 1.5 inches
Hicks, who is the nation's leader in the 60-meter hurdles, was unable to close the gap on Florida's Josh Walker, whom Hicks has previously beaten this season. Hicks' national leading time for the event is 7.66 seconds.
"There is a big target on Antwon every time he steps on the track," Head Coach Joe Walker said. "After he does some tuning up these next two weeks, I'm sure he will be ready for a rematch."
Franz Bernard also fared well for the Rebels in the 400-meter dash, as he finished with a time of 47.45 seconds. Bernard, a junior, also ran a leg in the Rebels' 4x400-meter relay squad that finished fifth overall. Another fifth-place finish came from redshirt freshman Charles Bailey in the long jump.
The Ole Miss Lady Rebels were led by middle-distance standout Rachel Ellison, who turned in a seasonal-best time of 2:11.56.
"Rachel is a hard worker who consistently performs well for us," Walker said. "She is a tough competitor, and we expect her to surprise some folks at SEC's."
Junior pole-vaulter Brandy Plyler, coming off a school-record performance last week in Notre Dame, came back this week with a solid vault 11 feet, 7.75 inches.
The Rebels and Lady Rebels will have a bye week before competing in the 2004 SEC Championships in Lexington, Ky., Feb. 27-29.
