Atkinson, Bernard, Hicks Lead Ole Miss At SEC Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Ole Miss juniors Brandon Atkinson, Franz Bernard and Antwon Hicks led the Ole Miss track and field teams at the SEC Invitational on Sunday. Atkinson won the triple jump with his leap of 51-8.25. Bernard took top honors in the 400 meters with his time of 48.05, while Hicks won the 55-meter hurdles with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 7.15.
"Brandon, Franz and Antwon had great meets," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "They have been very strong for us, especially considering how early in the season it is. As a team I thought we had a nice meet, as well."
Junior Shantel Glass placed fourth in the men's long jump with a season's best mark of 24-1. Freshman Charles Bailey was fifth in the event with his mark of 23-7.25.
The Rebel 4x400-meter relay team of Bernard, Clinton Fletcher, Demondrick Shumaker and Mark Gregory placed second with their time of 3:13.71.
Lady Rebel freshman Allyson Roberston placed second in the long jump with her mark of 18-7.75. Fellow freshman Amber Bledsoe was not far behind Robertson, as she placed fourth with her leap of 18-2.25. Junior LaToya McBride placed fifth in the long jump with her mark of 17-11.25.
Sophomore Rachel Ellison took home second place in the mile run. Ellison clocked in at 4:55.19. Ellison also placed seventh in the 800 meters by finishing with a time of 2:16.18.
Junior Octavia Carter placed fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with her time of 8.18. Junior Brandie Plyler tied for sixth place in the pole vault by clearing 11-2.25. Sophomore Antisha Anderson placed fifth in the high jump with her mark of 5-5.75. Carter finished sixth with her mark of 5-4.25.
Bledsoe placed sixth in the 55 meters with her time of 7.41. The Lady Rebel 4x400-meter relay team composed of Anderson, Carter, Kim Mulkey and McBride placed fifth with their time of 3:55.36.
Ole Miss will return to the track next weekend, when they travel to Lexington, Ky., for the Rod McCravy Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky.
