OXFORD, Miss. - With the current shortage of flu shots that has struck the nation, the Ole Miss athletic department is doing its part to aid in the crisis. Rebel athletics is donating 146 flu vaccinations to the University of Mississippi Student Health Service.
The athletic department is allocated flu shots to be used for student-athletes, but with the public shortage, has chosen to share its allotment. Ole Miss athletics will only vaccinate athletes that are at high risk for complications from flu, such as those with asthma or sickle cell disease, and athletic staff members that are in direct patient contact. The rest will be contributed to Student Health.
Shannon Singletary, Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine, said Ole Miss athletics has a duty to protect its student-athletes as well as help those less fortunate in the Oxford/University community.
"We feel like we should do our part to meet the guidelines set forth by the Center for Disease Control," Singletary said. "By doing so, we have served our athletes to the best of our ability and also served the community at need."
UM Student Health Service will be using the vaccinations to care for the University's numerous high risk students.
