NEW ORLEANS, La. - In honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning, the Sugar Bowl Committee is announcing the creation of the Manning Award to be presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback.

The first Manning Award recipient will be honored at a presentation ceremony to be held in January. The winner will be determined by a select national panel of media covering college football. Also voting will be each of the Mannings along with a former Sugar Bowl MVP quarterback, which will rotate annually. Voting for the award will take place immediately following the holiday bowl season.

"We appreciate the Sugar Bowl's leadership in creating this award," said Archie Manning, a former Sugar Bowl MVP at Ole Miss and an NFL MVP while with the New Orleans Saints. "Our family has been blessed to have enjoyed some success at the quarterback position, and we're excited to have the opportunity to play a part in recognizing the success of talented college quarterbacks."

The collegiate career of each of the Mannings was marked by high achievement as each earned first team All-America recognition before being drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft. All totaled, the trio accounted for over 28,500 yards and 260 touchdowns while playing college football.

At Ole Miss in the late 1960s, Archie blazed a trail for the Mannings by earning Southeastern Conference Player of the Year recognition and the Walter Camp Award as college football's national player of the year. He also finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy race following his junior season and then wound up third in the Heisman voting the next year.

Peyton starred at the University of Tennessee where he led the Vols to the SEC Championship in 1997 and was named the SEC Player of the Year. He also won the Davey O'Brien, Johnny Unitas Golden Arm, Maxwell and Sullivan Awards and finished second in the Heisman race that year.

Eli, who followed in his father's footsteps at Ole Miss, earned SEC Player of the Year honors in 2003 and was the recipient of both the Maxwell and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Awards. Like his father and brother before him, Eli also did well in the Heisman Trophy voting, finishing third last year.

"The Sugar Bowl Committee is enthusiastic in its support of the Manning Quarterback Award," said Paul Hoolahan, the bowl's executive director. "This is a fitting tribute to the excellence the Mannings have displayed over the years, and it is further testament to the Sugar Bowl's commitment to excellence in college football."
