OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss junior Brandie Plyler set a new Ole Miss record in the pole vault to lead the Lady Rebels at the Mississippi Invitational on Saturday. Plyler recorded a height of 12-3.5 to take home first place at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex, with her mark earning her an NCAA Regional Meet berth.
"I thought today's meet was great," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "Brandie really stepped up today and had a good showing. Hopefully she will continue to get better each meet.
"I thought we had several nice performances on both the track and the field this weekend. The weather was beautiful and we got to put our new facility to good use."
The Rebels again dominated the 400-meter dash field, only this week it was senior Franz Bernard taking the top honors. Bernard crossed the finish line first with his personal best time of 46.74. Freshman Kao Wokoma also turned in a personal best performance as he finished second with his time of 47.10. Both times were NCAA Regional qualifying times.
Sophomore Rachel Ellison turned in another top-notch performance in the 1,500 meters. Ellison clocked in at 4:25.30 to claim first place. Ellison's performance in the 1,500 meters was an NCAA Regional qualifying time.
Lady Rebel freshman Tiffany Taggert led a trio of Ole Miss finishers in the long jump. Taggert was the top finisher with her leap of 18-9, while fellow freshmen Allyson Robertson (18-7) and Amber Bledsoe (18-5) finished second and third, respectively.
Junior Octavia Carter finished first in the 100-meter hurdles (13.87) and junior Chiquita Stephens placed first in the 100 meters (11.56). Sophomore Kristi Stillwell placed second in the hammer throw (143-11) and freshman Crystal Stewart placed second in the discus with her personal best toss of 136-5.
At the conclusion of the first day of the heptathlon, Ole Miss junior LaToya McBride stands in second place with 3,081 points. McBride finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.31, 801 points), second in the high jump (5-5.75, 818 points), third in the shot put (34-4.25, 560 points) and second in the 200 meters (24.84, 902 points). McBride and the rest of the women in the heptathlon will return to the track tomorrow for the conclusion of the event.
On the men's side, junior Brandon Atkinson was the top finisher in the triple jump with his leap of 51-3, while freshman Charles Bailey was second in the long jump with his mark of 23-11, while Atkinson was third at 23-10. Senior Brett Canale won the hammer throw with his mark of 178-11, while junior Darius Leland finished second in the javelin with his toss of 155-4.
Freshman John McDowell was the second finisher in the 110-meter hurdles. McDowell turned in a personal best mark of 14.79. Junior Antwon Hicks placed third in the 100 meters with his personal best mark of 10.83. Bernard placed third in the 200 meters with his time of 21.24.
Ole Miss will return to the track next weekend when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays.
