OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team handed out its team awards and honored its four seniors at the 2003-04 Lady Rebel Basketball Athletic Banquet Monday at the Gillom Center.
A pair of academic awards kicked off the ceremony as senior forward Tia Watson was awarded the Most Improved Grade Point Average Award and senior forward Tywanna Inmon was presented the Highest Grade Point Average Award.
Freshman guard Ashley Awkward was the winner of the Lady Rebel Iron Award for her dedication to basketball during the off season training program, while junior guard Elizabeth Cansdale was the recipient of the Helping Hand Award for her commitment to community service.
Sophomore forward Ellen Buchanan and junior center Amber Terrell were both awarded the Eleanor Shaw Super Sub Award for their impact on the court from their reserve roles. The Unsung Hero Award was handed to senior guard Genice Terry. Terry was honored for being a quiet contributor who got the job done on the court without a lot of fanfare or attention.
Freshman guard Armintie Price was given the Defensive Stopper Award. The Defensive Stopper Award was given to the player that finished plays on the defensive end of the court. Price also won the Most Valuable Player Award. The 5-9 Blue Mountain, native, led the team in scoring (14.9), rebounding (9.4), steals (2.5) and field goal percentage (.561). She was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year and earned SEC Second Team honors.
Junior guard Carletta Brown was presented the Van Chancellor Coaches Award. The award was given to the player whom possessed the best attitude, work ethic, cooperation, unselfishness and enthusiasm.
The last award of the evening was handed down to Inmon, as she was the 2004 Lady Rebel Award presented by the Lady Rebel Roundballers. The Lady Rebel Award is given to the player that best exemplifies the Lady Rebel experience, the player that combines excellence in academics, athletics and community service.
After the individual awards were handed out, the team was presented with watches for participating in the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. The four seniors, Tenisha Gist, Inmon, Terry and Watson were then honored with their senior awards.
The 2003-04 Lady Rebel squad posted 17 wins on the season, including a 7-7 mark in SEC play. They returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1995-96 season, falling to Villanova, 66-63, in the first round. Ole Miss will lose the services of four seniors, but nine underclassmen along with SEC Co-Coach of the Year, Carol Ross, will return to the court for the 2004-05 season.
