OXFORD, Miss. - Battling through rain soaked conditions, Ole Miss senior Franz Bernard turned in the top performance on the day as he took home top honors in the 400 meters and the 200 meters at the Ole Miss Open on Saturday. Bernard clocked in at 47.16 to finish first in the 400 meters and was timed at 21.35 in winning the 200 meters.
Lady Rebel junior Chiquita Stephens also took home two first place finishes. Stephens was the top collegiate finisher in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters. She crossed the finish line in 11.93 in the 100 meters and 24.30 in the 200 meters.
"Both Franz and Chiquita turned in some good, solid performances, especially considering the weather," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "It was a tough day to compete with all of the conditions out there, but they found a way to get the job done.
"This was our last chance to fine tune things before the SEC Championships, so I was hoping for some good effort and that is exactly what we got. Now we just have to get back out and practice and prepare for the championship meet."
Bernard was followed on the 400 meters by freshman Kao Wokoma as he finished fifth with the time of 48.42. Freshman Demarco Potts placed sixth with his time of 48.61. Sophomore Mark Gregory placed third in the 200 meters with this time of 21.77.
Stephens led a trio of Lady Rebels in the 200 meters as freshman Kimberly Mulkey finished second with her time of 24.47 and freshman Amber Bledsoe was fourth with her time of 25.13. Mulkey also finished fourth in the 100 meters with her time of 12.11.
Sophomore Rachel Ellison was the top collegiate finisher in the 800 meters with her time of 2:11.37, while the Lady Rebel 4x100-meter relay team composed of Bledsoe, Stephens, Mulkey and junior LaToya McBride finished second with their season's best time of 45.67.
The Rebel 4x400-meter relay team composed of junior Demondrick Shumaker, freshman Demarco Potts, Wokoma and Bernard joined forces to take first place with their time of 3:11.28. The Rebel 4x100-meter relay team composed of freshman John McDowell, freshman Stephen Taylor, Gregory and senior James Shelton also finished second with their time of 41.71.
The majority of the field events were cancelled due to the weather, along with the sprint hurdles.
Ole Miss will take next weekend off in preparation for the 2004 SEC Championships. Ole Miss will host the SEC Championships for the first time in school history. The meet will take place at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex May 13-16.
