OXFORD, Miss. - Catalin Gard and Claes Lindholm of the 2004 SEC Champion Ole Miss men's tennis team will begin their quest for an NCAA Championship Wednesday in the singles competition at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.
Gard, the tournament's No. 4 seed, will open up play against Pedro Rico of Pepperdine Wednesday at Noon. The 2004 SEC Player of the Year, Gard comes into the NCAA Championships with a 28-8 overall record. He went 23-4 at No.1 singles and 10-1 in the SEC on his way to earning the conference's top honor and leading Ole Miss to the school's first outright SEC Championship in more than 10 years. Gard became the 17th All-American in the history of the program last year with his top 20 finish. He is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation.
Lindholm will face 9-16 seed, Lester Cook of Texas A&M, in the first round at 9 a.m. A two-time first team All-SEC honoree, Lindholm enters the NCAAs with a 30-8 overall record. He posted a 20-4 dual match record in helping the Rebels capture the 2004 SEC Championship.
This marks the 11th consecutive year and 16th overall for the Rebels to have a representative in the NCAA Individual Championships. Gard will also team up with senior Paul Ciorascu in the doubles, which begin Thursday.
