Rebel Netter Gard Advances At NCTC

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - Ole Miss men's tennis senior Catalin Gard, the nation's No. 1 ranked player, won his opening-round match at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic here Friday. The three-day tournament at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, features a strong field.
After a first-round bye, Gard, the 2004 SEC Player of the Year, defeated one of the top junior players from the United States, Treat Huey of Virginia, 6-4, 6-3. Huey, a freshman for the Cavaliers, was ranked No. 1 in USTA boys' 18s singles and won three singles and two doubles titles in 2004. Gard will face Virginia's 36th-ranked Rylan Rizza in the second round.
Fellow senior Karim Alayli, lost his first-round match to Darrin Cohen, also of Virginia, 7-5, 6-2. In doubles, Gard and Alayli had a first-round bye and then lost in a tiebreaker, 9-8(3), to 19th-ranked Rizza and his partner, Nick Meythaler, the quarterfinals.
A two-time All-American, Gard is the top attraction at this weekend's tournament, which features players from No. 2 ranked UCLA, No. 10 Virginia, No. 13 Kentucky, No. 16 Rice, and Pepperdine and Arizona.

Quarterfinals- Rylan Rizza/Nick Meythaler (UVA) def. Gard/Alayli (OM) 9-8(3).
