OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss (7-11, 1-5 SEC) picked up its first conference win of the season behind a balanced attack as the Rebels took down the Auburn Tigers (7-7, 1-5 SEC) on Sunday by a score of 3-0 (30-24, 30-27, 30-26).
The win for the Rebels snapped an eight-game losing streak and provided the first conference win of the season for Ole Miss. It also snapped a two-game losing streak to the Tigers.
Nikki Hill and Jaclyn Toohey led the Rebel attack with 17 kills each on the night, but it was the play of the middles that proved to be a huge difference for Ole Miss. Tricia Agee hit a career-high .600 for the match as she tallied 10 kills and five blocks (1 BS, 4 BA) on the night. Lauren Moffett also came up big with nine kills on the night as she hit .350 and tallied six blocks (1 BS, 5 BA).
Ole Miss outblocked the Tigers 11-to-6 on the day.
"This was a good win for us as we saw several players step up and get on track today," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "Jaclyn Toohey and Nikki Hill have been getting their kills, but to have Lauren Moffett and Tricia Agee step up in the middle like they did made all the difference for us. We need to build on this now as we take to the road for the next few matches."
Jennifer Amobi led Auburn with 15 kills on the afternoon, while Rachel Shanks added 12 kills for the Tigers. Defensively, Auburn saw three players tally double-digit digs with Bailey Veit and Alison Jacobs coming up with 12 digs, and Jelena Sekulic adding 11 digs.
Ole Miss jumped out of the gates early, taking a 6-0 lead on the Tigers in the first game of the day and forcing Auburn into a timeout. The Tigers recovered and began chipping away at the lead, cutting the Rebel advantage to two at 17-15, before Ole Miss would push ahead to take the first game 30-24.
The Rebels only tallied one total block for the first game, but the play of the middles would step up from there and dominate the match .
The second game saw both teams come out and challenge the other, trading points with Auburn holding the slight edge until Ole Miss made it's move with the score tied at 19. The Rebels took advantage of an Auburn service error to move ahead and never relinquished the lead, as Ole Miss took the second game 30-27.
The third game began much like the second, with the two teams locked in a dead-heat for control, with Auburn again moving ahead of the Rebels slightly. Ole Miss tied things at 14 and then moved ahead on a kill from Hill that gave the Rebels control of the game from that point. Ole Miss never looked back, moving on out to take the match with a 30-26 win in game three.
The Rebels will now take to the road for a five-game road trip that will begin next weekend with matches against Arkansas and LSU. Ole Miss will play the Lady `Backs at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 14 in Barnhill Arena.
