OXFORD, Miss. - There is hardly an instrument she can't play, and if she can't play it now you better believe she will be learning soon. Junior guard Ashley Awkward is Ole Miss' musician. The 5-6 guard can play anything, from the piano, to the drums, to the guitar. Making music is what she does. Its who she is.
And it's what she plans to do on the court.
"Playing point guard is similar to creating a song," said Awkward who is majoring in Excercise Science. "You have to be able to see and hear everything on the court to know what needs to happen next. With music it is much the same. It is very much about timing and knowing what move you should make or key you should play to get the best sound."
Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross is expecting Awkward to write the original score for the Lady Rebels this year. It's Awkard's time to run the show. Replacing departed senior Carletta Brown will not be easy, but it's a task Awkward is prepared to do.
"Carletta was a great point guard," said Awkward, who writes songs in her spare time. "It will be difficult to fill her shoes, but I am ready. After backing her up for the past two seasons I know what it takes to get the job done."
The 5-6 Memphis native has been electric on the court at times during her first two seaons as a Lady Rebel, single-handedly sparking Ole Miss to several wins with her play off the bench. Now it is time for her to step up and orchestrate the wins from the time the clock starts ticking.
