OXFORD, Miss. -
Eleven of 12 Lady Rebels scored, led by senior guard Ashley Johnson's 17 points, as Ole Miss (9-1) toppled Nicholls State 90-45 in its final game at Tad Smith Coliseum in 2005.
"This was a good win for us," said Ole Miss head coach Carol Ross. "We played hard throughout and did not lose any intensity despite gaining a big lead. This is also our third game in five days, so I was pleased with our focus."
Johnson led the way with her sixth-straight double-digit output, as she has scored in double figures in nine of 10 games this season.
Freshman forward Brandi Tipton poured in a career-high 14 points and seven rebounds in 16 minutes of action, as several Lady Rebel subs gained some valuable experience with the win. Tipton made 4-of-6 field goals, including 1-of-1 from the three-point arc, and finished 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
"Brandi played today the way we see her play in practice every day," said Ross. "She has been slowed early in the season by some health set-backs, but as she spends less time in the training room and more time in practice, I would not be surprised to see more of these types of performances from her."
Sophomore forward Carla Bartee rounded out the double-figure scoring for Ole Miss with 10 points, while Lindsay Roy added nine and Jada Mincy and LaTanya Jones each chipped in eight in the 45-point victory.
The Lady Rebels started hot, leading 16-4 at the 14:29 mark of the first half, but Nicholls State stayed in the game early, cutting the deficit to six at 18-12 at the 11:43 mark. Then Ole Miss would make another run and put the game out of reach in the first half, with a 31-6 run that made the score 49-18, before an eventual 49-22 halftime lead.
The leading margin for the Lady Rebels grew larger in the second period, as Ross' club continued to sub liberally and see youngsters like Tipton and freshman center Shawn Goff get some much-needed experience heading into the middle of the season.
Ole Miss' all-star guard Armintie Price logged just 19 minutes, scoring seven points and adding eight boards and three steals. The seven points snapped a 19-game streak of double-figure scoring for the preseason All-SEC pick.
For the game, the Lady Rebels forced 23 Lady Colonel turnovers and scored 31 points off those turnovers. Ole Miss out-rebounded Nicholls State 54-25 and held the Lady Colonels to 36 percent from the field. The Lady Rebel offense managed 48 percent shooting from the floor, including 42 percent from behind the arc.
Nicholls State (1-7) was led by 17 points from Katherine Plummer, including 12 in the second half, while Jamie Octave added nine points and five boards.
Up next for Ole Miss is a trip to Ruston, La., to take on the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech. Game time is set for 7 p.m., in Thomas Assembly Center.
