ALACHUA, Fla. - Ole Miss senior Jordan Dempsey tied for first, leading the Rebels to a first-place finish at the All-South Collegiate Invitational at the Plantation Oaks Golf Club as they kicked off their spring season Tuesday.
The Rebels shot an eight-under-par 568 for the two-day invitational, winning by 13 strokes over second-place Johnson and Wales University.
"We started out a lot sharper today," said Ole Miss head coach Ernest Ross. "We were very glad to win and glad to win our first tournament of the spring season. There is still a lot of room for improvement, but I'm proud of the improvement I've seen from day one to now."
After a five-year tournament victory drought, the Rebel golfers have posted two victories in the 2004-05 season after winning the Raising Cane Classic Sept. 20-21 in Hattiesburg, Miss., and now the All-South Collegiate Invitational.
Senior Jordan Dempsey of Jacksonville, Fla., matched his season-best round of 67 on Tuesday to launch him into a tie for first after an opening round of even-par 72. His 139 total tied him with Adam Scrimenti of Johnson and Wales.
After some windy and rainy conditions on Monday, Ole Miss dominated the second day of competition at the Plantation Oaks Golf Club. All six Rebel golfers carded a par or better, while the top four who scored for the Rebels all fired two-under-par or better. Ole Miss entered Tuesday with a three-stroke lead over Savannah College, but separated itself from the rest of the pack to win by 13 strokes.
Sophomore Kyle Ellis finished in a tie for third with Drew Downs of Webber International after firing two straight rounds of two-under-par 70. His two-day total of 140 landed him just one stroke behind the leaders. Other Ole Miss scores included a 74-69--143 by senior Lucas Boyd, a 76-70--146 by junior Adam Swope, a 77-70--147 by sophomore Callum Macaulay and a 78-72--150 by senior Ryan Michals, who competed as an individual.
The next stop for the Rebels is the Tulane Invitational, which will be held Feb. 28-March 1 in New Orleans.
