SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Ole Miss women's golf team wrapped up competition at their first tournament of the spring season Tuesday at the Golf Club at Boulder Ridge by placing eighth in the 36-hole Bay Area Classic.
Sophomore Katie Davidson was the Lady Rebels' top finisher as she tied for tenth place with a 74-82--156 two-round total. She tied Rachel Newren of BYU for the lowest round on Monday with the two-over-par 74, which was good for the third-lowest round of the two days.
As a team, Ole Miss finished 323-331--654.
"I'm not very happy about the results, but there were a lot of positive things we can take from this tournament, like Katie (Davidson) finishing tied for first after yesterday," said head coach Meghan Bolger. "We did not putt very well, and that is something we will need to work on. The golf course was not a course we typically play in the Southeast. It was very mountainous, and it was our first time out here. We made a lot of brilliant plays. We just have to work on a few things, and we will be fine.
Tournament co-hosts San Francisco and San Jose State finished first and second with scores of 318-307--625 and 320-306--626, respectively. BYU finished third and Fresno State fourth, while UC-Irvine and Hawaii tied for the fifth slot and Portland State came in seventh.
Ole Miss placed ahead of San Diego State, Cal Poly, Long Beach State and Santa Clara, with Notre Dame de Namur rounding out the 13-team field.
Junior Sarah Kate Cousart and senior Nikki Hadd turned in the Lady Rebels' lowest rounds of the day at 81 apiece to finish the tournament tied for 21st and tied for 36th, respectively. Cousart fired a five-over-par 79 Monday for a two-day total of 160, while Hadd shot an 84 Monday for a 165 total.
Junior Laura Evans recorded an 86-87--173, while freshman Katherine Jones rounded out the Ole Miss scoring with an 87-87-174 two-round total. Senior Lisha Beyer posted a 93-93--186 competing as an individual.
The eighth-place finish was the Lady Rebels' highest since they came in fourth at the Alabama/Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate Sept. 20-21 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The women's golf team is idle until it travels to Pinehurst, N.C., for the Edwin Watts/Pinehurst Challenge March 6-8.
