No. 15 Ole Miss Pounds Belmont

OXFORD, Miss. - Sophomore third baseman Chris Coghlan went 4-for-5 with four RBI and junior first baseman Stephen Head went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI as No. 15 (Sports Weekly/ESPN) Ole Miss pounded out 18 hits in an 18-0 win over Belmont Tuesday afternoon, in front of 2,855 at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Five different pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout for the Rebels (4-1), and Ole Miss used a total of 24 players on the afternoon.
Leading 2-0, Ole Miss broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. The first four batters of the inning reached safely on hits. Freshman DH Jon-Jon Hancock singled and sophomore left fielder Mark Wright followed with a double to start the frame. Junior Barry Gunther then singled to score Hancock and make it 3-0. Ryne Porter followed with another RBI single to score Wright and make it 4-0, and Gunther made it 5-0 when he scored on a wild pitch by Cody Blackard.
Two batters later, Coghlan extended the Rebels' lead to 6-0 on a RBI single to score Porter, and Head followed with a two-run home run down the right field line to cap the inning and make it 8-0. The home run was the first of the year for Head.
Junior left-hander Matt Maloney (1-0) worked five scoreless innings to earn the win, allowing two hits and striking out five.
Blackard (1-1) suffered the loss for the Bruins (3-1). He was charged with eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits and no walks, while striking out two in 3 2/3 innings.
Ole Miss would score two more runs in the sixth to make it 10-0 and then plated four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.
A total of 12 different Rebels recorded at least one hit on the afternoon.
Tuesday's game was the start of an 18-game home stand for Ole Miss. The Rebels will open a three-game weekend series against the Southern Illinois Salukis (4-2) Friday afternoon at 3 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field. Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and Sunday's series finale is also scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
