BATON ROUGE, La. - Ole Miss dominated in the triple jump events at the 2005 LSU Relays as senior Brandon Atkinson took home the men's title and freshman Alexis McField finished second in the women's contest. Atkinson earned an NCAA regional qualifying mark of 52-0 in winning his title, while McField also qualified for the NCAA regional meet with her second place mark of 41-9.25, which ranks second on the Lady Rebel all-time triple jump list.
"After coming up short at nationals, I was pleased with Brandon's performance today," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "He was disappointed a couple of weeks ago, but he has put that behind him and kicked off the outdoor season with a good mark.
"Alexis was impressive today, as well. This is a great starting point for her and with continued improvement she can be one of the top triple jumpers in the conference."
Freshman John Yarbrough had two solid performances in the hurdle races. Yarbrough placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 53.49, narrowly a qualifying time. Yarbrough placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 14.29, which did qualify him for the NCAA regional meet.
Senior Shantel Glass was the fourth Ole Miss regional qualifier with his second place finish in the long jump. Glass turned in a mark of 24-1 in taking second place. Sophomore Charles Bailey was right behind Glass with his third place distance of 23-10.
Senior Octavia Carter qualified for the NCAA regional meet with her mark of 13.83 in the 100-meter hurdles. Carter's time was good for third place in the meet. Freshman Carmia Carroll and senior LaToya McBride placed third and fourth, respectively, in the high jump. Both athletes cleared 5-7.25, with Carroll edging McBride in the standings on misses.
Junior Kristi Stillwell set a new Ole Miss record in the hammer throw with her second place mark of 156-6. The Lady Rebel 4x100-meter relay team placed second with their time of 45.93, while the 4x400-meter relay team placed third with their time of 3:44.72.
The Rebel 4x100-meter relay team placed third with their time of 41.10 and the 4x400-meter relay team also finished third with their time of 3:12.20.
Ole Miss will return to the track on Saturday, April 2, when they host the first of three home track meets in April. The Ole Miss Invitational will take place on April 2, with the heptathlon concluding on April 3.
