Mulkey Leads Ole Miss At First Day Of Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - Ole Miss sophomore Kimberly Mulkey continues to improve each week in several different events. The event of choice for Mulkey on Friday was the 100 meters. Mulkey earned an NCAA Regional qualifying mark by clocking in at 11.72 in the preliminaries of the prestigious Drake Relays. Mulkey was seventh in qualifying and will run in the finals on Saturday at 2:43 p.m.
"Kim just keeps getting stronger and stronger each week," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "She seems to be sneaking up on some people, but I am not surprised. She works extremely hard in practice and will only get better."
Mulkey and her Lady Rebel teammates junior Marquita Aldridge, senior Chiquita Stephens and freshman Kenyata Coleman also earned a bid to the finals in the 4x100-meter relay. The foursome clocked in at 45.26, which was the sixth fastest time in the prelims. The 4x100-meter relay final will take place at 4:11 p.m., on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Shantel Glass turned in a top-notch performance in the long jump as he leaped 25-3.5 to claim third place. Glass was able to finish in third place, despite only recording two legal jumps out of six. Senior Octavia Carter also advanced to Saturday's finals in the 100-meter hurdles. Carter crossed the finish line in the prelims at 13.94, which was the eighth fastest qualifying time. She will run the 100-meter hurdle final at 2:23 p.m.
Senior Chris Lawson moved forward to the 100-meter finals by turning in the third fastest qualifying time of 10.52. Lawson will run the 100-meter dash finals at 2:48 p.m. Freshman John Yarbrough finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 52.72.
The Rebel 4x400-meter relay team will compete in Saturday's final at 6 p.m., after clinching a spot with the eighth fastest qualifying time of 3:11.54.
