OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's basketball team handed out its team awards and honored its four seniors at the 2004-05 Lady Rebel Basketball Athletic Banquet Thursday evening at the Indoor Practice Facility Banquet Room.
Academic awards kicked off the ceremony as senior center Amber Terrell was awarded the Most Improved Grade Point Average Award and sophomore guard Ashley Awkward was presented the Highest Grade Point Average Award. Also recognized for academic achievement was graduate administrative aide Takilya Davis, who was honored with the H. Leon Garrett Achievement Award in Health Promotion. Davis was honored by the University in a separate ceremony last week.
Senior guard Elizabeth Cansdale picked up certificates for two honors she received for her community service activity. Cansdale was Ole Miss' honoree on the 2005 SEC Good Works Team. Cansdale also was recognized for being selected for the SEC Community Service Postgraduate Scholarship. She received a $2,000 scholarship last week to continue her education.
Freshman guard Tasi Worsham was the winner of the Lady Rebel Iron Award for her dedication to basketball during the off season training program, while junior guard Ashley Johnson was the recipient of the Helping Hand Award for her commitment to community service and campus involvement.
Awkward was awarded the Eleanor Shaw Super Sub Award for her impact on the court from her reserve role. Awkward averaged 4.5 points and 1.5 rebounds off-the-bench. The Unsung Hero Award was delivered to junior forward Ellen Buchanan and redshirt freshman forward Jada Mincy. The duo was honored for being quiet contributors who got the job done on the court without a lot of fanfare or attention off it.
Sophomore guard Armintie Price was given the Defensive Stopper Award. The Defensive Stopper Award was given to the player that finished plays on the defensive end of the court. Price, who earned SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors, was the first player in the history of the conference to lead the league in rebounding and steals in the same season.
Price also won the Most Valuable Player Award for the second-straight season. The 5-9 Blue Mountain, native, led the team in scoring (16.7), rebounding (10.3), steals (3.2) and field goal percentage (.537). She was named to the SEC First Team by the league coaches and earned SEC Player of the Week honors twice during the season.
Senior guard Carletta Brown was presented the Van Chancellor Coaches Award for the second consecutive year. The award was given to the player whom possessed the best attitude, work ethic, cooperation, unselfishness and enthusiasm. Brown was also honored at the banquet for winning the Eugenia Conner Memorial Award. She was presented the award at last weekend's Red-Blue Grove Bowl game. The award is given annually to the most outstanding female athlete at Ole Miss in achievement, character, leadership and spirit.
The last award of the evening was handed down to Cansdale, as she was the 2005 Lady Rebel Award winner presented by the Lady Rebel Roundballers. The Lady Rebel Award is given to the player that best exemplifies the Lady Rebel experience, the player that combines excellence in academics, athletics and community service.
After the individual awards were handed out, the team was presented with watches for participating in the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. The four seniors, Brown, Cansdale, Terrell and Amber Watts were then honored with their senior awards.
The 2004-05 Lady Rebel squad posted 19 wins on the season, including an 8-6 mark in SEC play. They made their second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, falling 60-57 to George Washington in the First Round. Ole Miss will lose the services of four seniors, but nine underclassmen along with 14th-ranked recruiting class in the nation will return to the court for the 2005-06 season.
