HATTIEBSURG, Miss. - Beau Griffin hit a three-run walk-off home run as Southern Miss rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat No. 9 (Baseball America) Ole Miss Tuesday evening, in front of a Pete Taylor Park record crowd of 5,377.
The victory was the 11th straight for the Golden Eagles (23-5), while the Rebels (21-8) dropped their third consecutive game.
Griffin finished the night 4-for-5 with six RBIs. He also had an RBI single in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1 and had a two-run single in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.
Ole Miss scored four runs in the eighth inning to rally from a 6-3 deficit and take a 7-6 lead. The Rebels then tacked on two runs in the ninth on a home run by Chris Coghlan, his fifth of the season.
Right-hander John Nicholas (1-0), the fifth Southern Miss pitcher on the night, worked one inning of relief to pick up the win.
Right-hander Brian Pettway (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits and one walk in 1/3 of an inning.
Pettway went 3-for-5 with an RBI to pace the Rebels at the plate. Alex Presley hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot in the seventh that trimmed Ole Miss' deficit to 6-3.
Brad Willcutt also went 3-for-5 for the Golden Eagles as Southern Miss out-hit Ole Miss 15-13 on the evening.
This was the second of three scheduled meetings between the two teams this season. Ole Miss won 9-1 in Oxford back on March 8 and the two teams are scheduled to play at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson, Miss., on April 19.
Ole Miss will return to action Friday evening when the Rebels open a three-game Southeastern Conference series against No. 22 (Collegiate Baseball) Alabama (22-9). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
