OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's golf team will return to action this weekend at the Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate in Auburn, Ala., after nearly a month since their eighth-place finish at the Conrad Rehling Invitational.
"We're really looking forward to getting back to competition," said head coach Ernest Ross. "The team has practiced extremely well over the last three weeks. We've tried to target our weaknesses and work on improving. We have not played well in the wind, so we've used every windy day as an opportunity to practice that."
Senior Jordan Dempsey will lead the Rebels into Auburn with the SEC's low stroke average of 71.12. He will be joined in the five-man lineup by sophomore Brice Bailey, sophomore Kyle Ellis, senior Lucas Boyd and sophomore Callum Macaulay.
That group is also slated to comprise the Ole Miss lineup for the SEC Championships, which will be held next weekend, April 15-17, in Sea Island, Ga.
The 12-team tournament field includes Auburn, College of Charleston, Illinois, UAB, South Alabama, Jacksonville State, Southeastern Louisiana, Georgia State, Ole Miss, Memphis, Mississippi State and Charlotte.
Last year's champion and host Auburn is rated No. 6 in the country in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin performance index, while Georgia State is No. 17.
"Auburn and Georgia State are two of the premier teams in the country, and we look forward to the opportunity to try and knock off one of them," Ross added.
The Rebels tied for eighth at last year's Billy Hitchcock Intercollegiate, behind a seventh-place 73-70-73--216 by then-freshman Kyle Ellis. Ole Miss has participated in the three-day event every year since 1992. The tournament was established in 1988.
The Rebels are scheduled to tee off at 9:50 a.m. Friday, and competition will run through Sunday at the Auburn University Club at Yarbrough Farms. The course is par 72 and will be played at 7,207 yards for the 54-hole weekend tournament.
