JACKSON, Miss. - Ole Miss junior first baseman/left-handed pitcher Stephen Head and junior outfielder Brian Pettway are two of four finalists for the 2005 Cellular South Ferriss Trophy, which is awarded annually to Mississippi's top college baseball player.
Joining Head and Pettway are Delta State senior catcher Craig Newton and Millsaps junior infielder Garner Wetzel.
Major League scouts covering Mississippi schools, coaches of the four-year college programs in the state, and one media representative comprise the 25 voters who determine the finalists and the eventual winner of the Ferriss Trophy.
Head has started all 53 games for the Rebels this season, starting 46 games at first base and drawing seven starts on the mound. He is hitting .308 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI. He is tied for third in the Southeastern Conference in RBI and is tied for sixth in home runs.
On the mound, Head has made 17 appearances, including seven starts, posting a 7-2 record with four saves and a 2.89 ERA. He has also recorded 57 strikeouts, while walking 22 in 65 1/3 innings.
Head won the 2004 Ferriss Award.
Pettway has started all 53 games in the outfield and is batting .415 with 17 home runs and 57 RBI. He currently leads the SEC in batting average and hits, and is third in home runs and fifth in RBI.
Pettway has also made 12 relief appearances, going 1-1, with four saves, and a 4.05 ERA.
After a final round of voting, the winner will be announced at a dinner with the finalists present at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum in Jackson on Monday. Former New York Yankees' infielder and American League President Dr. Bobby Brown will be the keynote speaker following remarks from Dave "Boo" Ferriss, the award's namesake. Ferriss is a member of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, the Mississippi State University Sports Hall of Fame and the Delta State University Sports Hall of Fame.
