5/20/2005 | Track and Field

May 20, 2005

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss sophomore Kimberly Mulkey had a solid freshman season and after a somewhat disappointing 2005 indoor season, Mulkey has exploded on to the scene during the 2005 outdoor season. The Albany, Ga., native has set personal bests in the 200 and 400 meters this season. She has qualified to compete in the 200 meters, as well as the 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay at next weekend's NCAA Mideast Regional meet. Mulkey sat down to answer some questions earlier this week.

10 BURNING QUESTIONS WITH Kimberly Mulkey

1. What made you choose Ole Miss?
This is where I got the best scholarship offer. I did not know much about Ole Miss, but after coming here I know it was the right choice for me.

2. What race has been in your mind your best ever? Why?
My best race ever was my first 200-meter race of the 2005 outdoor season because it gave my confidence a boost that I really needed for the whole season. I did not do well during the indoor season and it gave me the confidence to know that my work was going to pay off.

3. When you get in the starting blocks, what is going through your mind?
First of all my mind goes blank for a minute. Then I focus in on the race and take the crowd out of it. When the starter says `set' I think "I can do all things through Jesus Christ" and by that time the gun has gone off.

4. What other sports did you play in high school?
I ran cross country, but it is all the same. I did not have an option do to anything else, my coach would not let me!

5. Who is your favorite athlete at Ole Miss (outside of track)?
Armintie Price with women's basketball. We both came in to Ole Miss at the same time. She has a competitive spirit. When you watch her play she seems like she is on another level. I really like watching her play and the way she competes.

6. Who has been the biggest influence in your track career?
One of my coaches back at home. He used to coach Special Olympics. He was there at the very beginning encouraging me to stay with track. He has pushed me all along to keep doing what I am doing, regardless of how I have performed.

7. What things do you like to do in your spare time?
I do not have much spare time. I used to like to go watch movies. I am kind of boring. I am a laid-back home body type of person.

8. Do you want to pursue a professional track career? And what other career plans do you have?
No professional track plans for me. I want to go into pharmaceutical sales. I am majoring in marketing and I would like to do something along those lines.

9. What are three words that best describe you?
Determined, Motivated, Laid-back

10. Who is going to win America's Next Top Model?
I thought Niama would win and I was right!
