NASHVILLE, Tenn. - All-SEC golfer Jordan Dempsey fired rounds of 75, 69 and 75 to finish with a 219 and in a tie for 68th at the NCAA East Regional, which was held Thursday through Saturday at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville.
Dempsey will not move on to the NCAA Championships, as only the top two individual scores from each of the three regionals advance. Dempsey finished fifth in the individual competition in Nashville.
"Jordan had a great career and season at Ole Miss," said head coach Ernest Ross. "Unfortunately he ended on a little bit of a disappointing note. His short game was not quite as sharp as it normally is, but I'm very proud of the way Jordan played and competed as an Ole Miss Rebel. I wish I had him for several more years here."
That means one of the most outstanding golf careers in Ole Miss history has come to an end. For his career, Dempsey recorded a 72.76 stroke average at Ole Miss. He also notched seven top-five finishes, 13 top-10 showings and 20 top-20 outings for his career.
This year, Dempsey led the SEC in stroke average throughout most of the season, including the entire spring portion of the season, as he finished with a 71.60 season average upon the conclusion of the NCAA East Regional. That marks the second-best season stroke average in the Ole Miss record book, second only to Dave Peege's 70.80 average in his 1983-84 All-American season.
The ACC's Wake Forest took the top team honors in the regional, followed by SEC foes Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. The remaining six teams that will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held June 1-4 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., are Georgia State, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Coastal Carolina, Duke and Georgia Southern. The top two individuals that will advance are Tulane's Chris Wheeler (69-69-70--208) and Michael Thompson (70-69-70--209).
