No. 17 Ole Miss Completes Sweep Of No. 18 Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Freshman shortstop Zack Cozart hit two home runs and had four RBI as No. 17 (Sports Weekly/ESPN) Ole Miss defeated No. 18 Arkansas 9-1 to complete a three-game sweep of this weekend's Southeastern Conference series Sunday afternoon, in front of 7,270 at Baum Stadium.
The victory secured Ole Miss a piece of its first SEC Western Division title since 1982, as the Rebels finished the regular season tied with LSU for first place in the SEC West with 18-12 conference marks. The Tigers defeated Mississippi State 3-2 in Starkville to earn a share of the SEC West title.
Ole Miss also improved to 40-16 overall, tying the school record for wins in a season set by the 1995 team that finished 40-22. The Rebels' 18 SEC wins also tied the school record set last year.
Arkansas dropped 37-18 overall and 13-17 in the SEC, however, the Razorbacks still qualified for next week's SEC Tournament.
The Rebels hit three home runs in scoring five runs in the second. Stephen Head started the inning with a lead-off home run, his 17th of the season, to give Ole Miss a 1-0 lead. After Mark Wright walked and Cooper Osteen singled, Cozart belted a three-run home run to extend the lead to 4-0. Gunther then followed with his third home run of the year to make it 5-0.
Cozart later added a solo shot in the fourth inning to make it 6-0. The home runs were his eighth and ninth of the season.
Junior left-hander Eric Fowler (6-2) pitched seven shutout innings to earn the win, allowing six hits and three walks, while striking out six.
Sophomore right-hander Josh Smith (1-3) was charged with the loss, allowing five runs on six hits and one walk in three innings.
Ole Miss had six players record two hits on the afternoon as the Rebels out-hit the Razorbacks 14-9.
Clint Arnold went 5-for-5 for the Razorbacks and drove in Arkansas' run with an RBI single in the ninth to score Clay Goodwin.
Ole Miss will enter the 2005 SEC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 seed Alabama Wednesday at 8 p.m., at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Ala.
