McBride And Atkinson Pick Up All-America Honors

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Ole Miss senior LaToya McBride earned All-America honors for the first time in her career by placing seventh in the hepathlon at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships. McBride posted 5,577 points during the seven events over the past two days at the Alex G. Spanos Track and Field Complex.
"LaToya had a great meet," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker. "She really competed and showed a lot of determination out there. I am very proud of her and pleased she could come away with All-America honors."
McBride turned in personal best marks in two of her three events on Saturday. She opened the day nearly posting a personal best with her mark of 19-7.5 in the long jump, falling just one inch short of her all-time best. For her efforts she tallied 843 points in the long jump.
In her second event of the day, McBride tossed the javelin 115-10 for a new career best mark. She posted 578 points in the javelin. She then clocked in at 2:23.77 for a new personal best time in the 800 meters to close out her competition. McBride gathered 773 points for her performance in the 800 meters.
"I am very excited about my performance," said McBride. "It was a long two days, but it was worth it. Being an All-American is something I have worked very hard at becoming. Now all that practice has become worth while."
Fellow senior Brandon Atkinson also earned All-America honors as she placed eighth in the triple jump. Atkinson turned in a mark of 52-8.75 to pick up his second-straight All-America honor this year. Atkinson also earned All-America honors in the triple jump at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships.
