OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss (4-2) split the first day of action in the 2005 edition of the Magnolia Invitational, winning the first match of the day 3-2 over Lamar (1-8) before dropping the nightcap 3-1 to No. 17 Texas (3-1).

The Rebels took the first game from the Lamar Lady Cardinal in a tight five game contest 3-2 (30-26, 20-30, 25-30, 30-26, 15-11). Ole Miss closed the night with a four-game loss to the 17th-ranked Longhorns 3-1 (26-30, 20-30, 30-27, 21-30) in front of a rowdy crowd of 468 in the Gillom Sports Complex.

"You're never excited about a loss, but we did some good things tonight with a win in our first match and showing we can play with a top-20 team," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "We're going to need what we learned in the Texas match tonight when we get into conference play. When you play a good team like that, you have to know they are going to respond and take it to a next level. We have to find a way to respond as well and answer back consistently."

Jaclyn Toohey, Katie Kramer and Emily Jones all paced Ole Miss against the Longhorns, hitting above .300 for the match. Toohey tallied 15 kills, while Jones and Kramer added eight and seven kills, respectively. Nikki Hill led all Rebels with 18 kills on the night.

Texas was paced by three players in double-digit kills as Lauren Paolini matched Hill with 18 kills for the Longhorns. Brandy Magee and Dariam Acevedo added 16 and 12 kills.

In the first match of the day, the Rebels fought back from behind to regain control of the match and take a 3-2 win over Lamar.

Hill led the Rebels with 23 kills, while Kramer added 11 kills on the night.

Lamar was paced by Buchi Okoh who put up 18 kills, while she was joined by Nikki Perry with 15 kills and Courtney Mitchell with 11 kills.

Ole Miss will return to action on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Rebels will play Lipscomb at 2:30 before ending the tournament with a match against North Carolina State at 7:30 p.m.
