OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss Women's Basketball team took time out of their busy schedules recently to help those evacuees affected by Hurricane Katrina. The Lady Rebels volunteered at the Katrina Resource Center, which is located in the old Wal-Mart in Oxford.
Some Ole Miss players spent time playing with the children while parents were taking care of paperwork or using the computers, while other team members helped by greeting people at the door or helping with paperwork.
"I'm glad that we could play with the children," said sophomore Danetra Forest. "It was great to see the smiles on their faces. I can't imagine how confusing of a time this must be for them."
The Lady Rebels have also been helping the victims by collecting clothing and toiletries to donate to the Resource Center.
"We just wanted to help in any way we could," said junior Armintie Price. "We hoped to brighten their day and hopefully take their mind off this tragedy for a little while."
The Ole Miss women's basketball team will begin official practice of Friday, Oct. 14th. They will play their lone exhibition contest against Athletes In Action on Wed., Nov. 10th. The Lady Rebels will tip-off the 2005-06 regular season on Friday, Nov. 18th, when they play host to Rice in Tad Smith Coliseum. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
