Rebels Drop Tightly Contested Match With Southern Miss 3-2

MOBILE, Ala. - Ole Miss (6-4) fell on a neutral floor for the first time this season, dropping the opening match of the South Alabama Tournament to in-state rival Southern Miss (3-2) in a tightly contested match 3-2 (30-23, 29-31, 30-27, 32-30, 13-15).
Ole Miss saw three players notch double digits in kills for the match, paced by junior Kristen Carroll's season-high 19 kills. She was joined by Nikki Hill and Jaclyn Toohey, who both added 17 kills each on the night.
Freshman Nicole Mahan continued to play well on the back row for the Rebels, leading the defense with 14 digs on the night.
Southern Miss was led by Stevi Cherry with 20 kills and Ashley Petrinic who tallied 18 kills for the Southern Miss team. Ole Miss took the first game of the night from the Golden Eagles, grabbing the 30-23 win in the first game, which typically spells success for the Rebel squad. But Southern Miss had other plans as the Golden Eagles would then take the next tightly contested game 31-29.
The Rebels came back and returned the favor in the third game, taking it down to the wire before grabbing the win with a 30-27 win. But Southern Miss would snag the match, snatching away the final two games by tight margins 32-30 and 15-13.
Ole Miss will return to action with two matches on Saturday. The Rebels will face off with North Florida at 1:30 p.m. and then face South Alabama at 7 p.m. in the nightcap.
